The search for Gravitational Waves

'LIGO, A Passion for Understanding' is a new documentary that premièred recently on space.com. This documentary follows scientists working with LIGO and their studies on gravitational waves. The LIGO Observatory is operated by teams from the California Institute of Technology and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. LIGO’s observatories use 4 km laser beams to hunt for gravitational waves.

What occurs when a star enters a black hole? Scientists think that the energy released could disturb the fabric of the space-time continuum, similar to how we throw a stone into a pond which in turn produces ripples. Such ripples as these are called gravitational waves. In the past its been difficult to prove the existence of these waves, but their future detection can help to open up a brand new window into our understanding of the Universe.

LIGO, the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatories have been searching for these gravitational waves. You can watch a two minute preview below of the larger 20 minute documentary.

LIGO’s project based upon the search for these gravitational waves ended in 2010, but the Advanced LIGO project composed of newly upgraded instruments is planned to begin its run in late 2015. Advanced LIGO will probe deeper into the universe in search of gravitational waves.

The full twenty minute documentary can be watched below. Alternatively you can watch a larger version directly from space.com here. (larger version recommended)
